A Stylish Escape in the Caucasus Mountains

Nestled in the heart of the dramatic Caucasus mountain range, Rooms Hotel Kazbegi is arguably Georgia’s most distinctive—and certainly one of its most luxurious—hotels. Perched in the village of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi), this striking retreat is surrounded on all sides by snow-capped peaks, with the tallest summit soaring to nearly 5,000 metres.

Originally built during the Soviet era as a lavish resort for the elite, the hotel spent decades abandoned and in disrepair. Today, following a comprehensive and meticulous renovation, it has been reborn as a chic design hotel—where every corner reflects stylish sophistication and thoughtful detail.

The hotel boasts a wellness area centred around a large indoor swimming pool, complete with loungers both indoors and out. The water is invitingly warm, and the atmosphere remains serene—enhanced by panoramic views of the mountains, provided the mist hasn’t rolled in to veil them. There’s also a sauna, although Finnish guests may find it a touch odd that water cannot be poured onto the Harvia stove—resulting in a dry rather than steamy heat.

Accommodation ranges from rooms with limited mountain views to those offering breathtaking, unobstructed vistas. All rooms have been carefully refurbished, featuring clean-lined, elegant interiors. The in-house restaurant serves quality cuisine at mid-range prices, while the inviting lounge bar and airy common areas make it easy to linger longer. Breakfast, although somewhat modest in its selection, maintains high quality—the made-to-order omelette standing out as a definite highlight.

Stepantsminda is a haven for mountain lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, with peak season falling in the summer months. Trekking, mountain biking, and a host of other outdoor pursuits take centre stage here. During our stay, most of our fellow guests were part of various-sized tour groups, with Chinese travellers representing a significant portion.
